Sustainability

For Grupo Fleury, the issue of Sustainability is directly linked to the company’s mission and is understood as the integrated and balanced management of the so-called Triple Bottom Line concepts (economic activity, the environment and the well-being of society), together with process quality, an absolutely essential value that permeates the entire organization. This concept is fully aligned with the company’s mission and strategy, thereby adding value to the organization, the environmental and society as a whole. The Group’s commitment to the issue is expressed in its Sustainability Policy (Portuguese only), which guides the performance of all its employees.

This understanding of the concept of Sustainability is expressed in the various dimensions that sustain the Grupo Fleury model.

The Group’s materiality matrix, constructed together with its stakeholders, presents the priority activities, defining the Sustainability agenda. The initiatives developed as a result of this agenda are in turn focused on reducing the company’s socio-environmental risk, as well as expenses, on the building of win-win relationships and on opportunities that generate a competitive advantage.

ISE (Corporate Sustainability Index)

Since 2014, Grupo Fleury has been included in the portfolio of the ISE, a BM&FBOVESPA index comprising those companies listed on the Brazilian stock exchange with the best Sustainability practices in regard to economic efficiency, environmental balance, social justice and corporate governance.

Environment

Grupo Fleury’s adaptation to ISO 14001 requirements began with the move to its current headquarters in the Jabaquara region of the south side of São Paulo city in the second half of 2000. The installations are fully equipped physically to meet all the technical specifications of the standard, especially those related to complex issues such as the internal treatment of infectious healthcare waste, for which it obtained an environmental license in 2006, an unprecedented event in the area.

The company also monitors various environmental management programs, the most important of which are related to reducing the generation of waste and saving natural resources such as energy, water and paper. In this context, the Company has been carrying out separate waste collection in all its facilities since the 1990s, as well as ensuring the correct disposal of other materials that may have an adverse effect on the environment, including chemical reagents, x-ray films, fluorescent lamps and cooking oil.

In 2008, Fleury began the Mercury-Free Company program in association with the São Paulo Regional Labor Delegacy (DRT/SP), as a result of which more than 400 items of equipment containing metallic mercury, such as thermometers and blood pressure gauges, have been replaced with mercury-free digital alternatives. This initiative earned the recognition of the DRT/SP.

Also in 2008, the Group inaugurated its first sustainable unit in Rochaverá-Morumbi. Built in accordance with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, the unit incorporated Sustainability requirements from the project phase through to the works in order to reduce its impact and was the first health area building in Brazil to receive the LEED gold certificate. In 2012, the Fleury Alphaville unit received the same recognition, and in 2015 Fleury Ponte Estaiada obtained the maximum platinum certification, the first health establishment in Latin America to do so.

As a result of its environmental commitment, since 2009 the Group has been compiling an inventory of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of its various activities, such as energy consumption and the number of trips by its employees, among others. In 2013, it added GHG emissions from the activities of third parties in its inventory. Based on this survey, it defined a series of targets and initiatives to manage the impact of climate change, including the adoption of a bike courier service at its headquarters in São Paulo, the introduction of measures to control and reduce electricity consumption, improved control over corporate trips, and a green IT solution for the management of printer output and documents.

Grupo Fleury’s inventory is publicly registered with the Brazilian GHG Protocol program and it participates voluntarily in the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Program).

Quality

Awarded ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification in 1999 and 2002, respectively, as well as certification by the PALC (Clinical Laboratory Accreditation Program), the Grupo Fleury also plays an active role in rigorous national and international quality control programs, including the Surveys and Anatomic Pathology Education Programs of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the Laboratory Trial Proficiency Program (PELM) of the Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine (SBPC/ML). As a result, in 2007 it received international accreditation from the CAP.

In addition, in 2011 the Group was accredited by the American College of Radiology for its mammography services at the Itaim unit. In 2012, its mammary biopsy, PET-CT and nuclear medicine services at the Paraíso unit received similar recognition, as did its magnetic resonance service at the Higienópolis unit.

Corporate Citizenship

Our corporate values include a commitment to sharing knowledge and the ability to put ourselves in the place of others and truly understand their situation. With this in mind, the Group develops social initiatives with its surrounding communities geared towards health and education and trains its employees to take part in the corporate volunteer program. The main areas of activity are listed below:

Social Programs:
DOM is a long-standing program aligned with the Group’s focus on corporate social initiatives, based on the dissemination of knowledge and health training. Divided into three sections - individual, voluntary sector and society - the program seeks to improve health services, form qualified professionals and make a broader contribution to enhancing the health scenario as a whole. The program’s main initiatives are listed below:

  • Individual DOM:

> A customer service training course involving the professional qualification of youngsters aged between 16 and 18 in the Rio Grande do Sul regional center, using the methodology developed by the Fundação Projeto Pescar. At the end of the program, the youngsters are invited to take part in selection processes for positions in the company’s service and administrative areas;

> Conecta Saúde (Connect Health): developed in association with Philips do Brasil, this program aims to contribute to health education through the propagation of knowledge regarding sexually-transmitted diseases, the use of drugs and underage pregnancy in those regions where the Company maintains a presence.

  • Voluntary sector DOM:

Focuses on improving the management of non-governmental institutions in the health area through training and the development of practical projects, with mentoring from Group volunteers, raising the provision of attendee service to new levels of excellence.

  • Society DOM:

Involves joint operations with public health institutions in order to improve their management processes.

The Group’s corporate citizenship initiatives are handled by company employees, which is why the corporate volunteer program - Grupo Fleury Volunteers - plays such an important role. It covers all the organizations voluntary initiatives using a governance model based on the creation of volunteer committees and mechanisms for attracting and monitoring the volunteer base.

In this context, for the last two years the Group has been participating in a project of the NGO Voluntários do Sertão in Ribeirão Preto (SP), which has been providing health, social aid, and safe food and nutrition to underserved communities in the northeast savannah region for 16 years. In 2015, as part of this campaign, the Group assisted around 2,000 people and collected 1.5 tons of food. In 2016, this increased to almost 3,000 people and around 2.7 tons of food. The medical exams offered were mammography, ultrasonography, colposcopy, electrocardiograms, clinical analyses and bone density scans, as well as clinical assistance with nutrition and gastroenterology.   • The Group is also responsible for the following corporate citizenship initiatives:
  • Corporate donation program: the donation of goods and medical exams to previously selected social institutions.
  • Tax Incentive Laws: financial transfers to projects focusing on health, education, culture and/or sports previously approved by the responsible authorities, including transfers linked to the Sports Law, the São Paulo Municipal Children and Teenagers’ Fund (Fumcad) and the Rouanet Law (cultural projects).
  • Solidarity initiatives: the holding of corporate campaigns to collect goods and food and effect one-off interventions in voluntary institutions in line with the needs of the selected institution.

Dialogue with Stakeholders

Encouraging dialogue and the creation of relationships of trust between the different agents in our value chain is one of the Group’s main objectives, thereby ensuring connections, exchanges and synergies that drive change in the sector, as it evolves towards an increasingly sustainable model with shared responsibilities.

  • Maintaining relationships based on ethical behavior and transparency
  • Valuing diverse ideas and styles
  • Encouraging the exchange of knowledge
  • Seeking solutions for healthier systems

The organization’s initiatives that embody these principles:

  • Dialogue sessions with stakeholders: face-to-face meetings and/or surveys in which health market agents are invited to think about the current challenges facing the health sector in order to identify possible solutions or opportunities for joint action.
  • Supply Chain Relationship Excellence Program - PERC: aims to ensure closer relations between Fleury and its supply chain, recognizing those suppliers with the best performance over the year. All suppliers eligible for the program are evaluated in regard to good Sustainability practices, innovation and quality management.
